MIAMI, Fla. (FOX 13) - After good Samaritans spotted a pelican struggling in the water, Miami-Dade firefighters swooped in to rescue it.
The pelican, with a broken wing, was spotted near the Miami arena around 5:30 p.m. Sunday. When firefighters arrived by boat they noticed an obvious injury to its left wing.
Firefighters tried to come close to the pelican several times, but the frightened bird continued to move away. Eventually, they were able to pluck the bird out of the water, reported the Miami Patch.
"Miami-Dade Fireboat crews are trained and able to assist with all kinds of emergencies," Erika Benitez of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue told the Patch. "The crew feels a great sense of pride to be able to care not only for us humans, but also for the wildlife that makes up an important part of our ecosystem."
