LECANTO (FOX 13) - Bay area law enforcement are warning the public about a wide-spread phone scam involving the IRS.
The Citrus County Sheriff's Office said it received multiple calls Friday about possible scammers calling, saying they were from the IRS.
The callers asked for personal information, saying they were calling in relations to a person's income tax return.
Officers warned these calls are a scam. They said anyone who receives a similar phone call should report it immediately.
To file a report, call the Federal Trade Commission's Phone Scam line at 1-800-366-4484.
A formal complaint may also be filed with the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint. From the complaint homepage, select "Other," and then "Imposter Scams."
