Tampa police said an officer's bulletproof vest may have saved his life during a shooting Saturday afternoon.

Authorities said the incident happened around 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the Hyatt Place hotel on N. 30th Street in Tampa.

According to investigators, a witness called to report that two men were in an altercation in a vehicle and they spotted it driving into the hotel's parking lot. The men were identified as 46-year-old Patrick McManamon and 51-year-old Edward King.

When officers got to the scene, gunfire was exchanged between them and McManamon. A police officer and McManamon were both shot. Police said they believe King was fatally shot by McManamon before officers arrived.

The injured officer, identified as 53-year-old Jose Rodriguez, was taken to Tampa General Hospital and is expected to survive, thanks to his bulletproof vest.

McManamon was pronounced dead at a hospital. He has a lengthy criminal history and has served time in prison.

Detectives are actively investigating the shooting and interviewing witnesses. Rodriguez is a 13-year veteran with Tampa police.
