ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - St. Petersburg police responded to the shooting of a 10-year-old boy Monday morning.
According to police, the shooting occurred at about 10:35 a.m. in the 2300 block of 17th Avenue South. The boy was at a neighbor's house with four other kids ranging in age between 9 and 17.
Police say the 17-year-old was supposed to be watching the younger kids. But somehow, one of them got a hold of a firearm in the home and shots were fired by an 11-year-old boy.
The victim suffered serious upper-body injuries and was transported to the hospital. He is now alert, oriented and stable, according to police.
The 17-year-old, identified as Marquis Strickland, was charged with aggravated child abuse.
"This is our opportunity as a police department to stress to people to be responsible gun owners and to secure those weapons away from children," said Major Shannon Halstead.
