A day after the internet and pop culture turned on one of its own, singer Ariana Grande said her words about hating Americans were taken out of context.
Earlier this week, a video obtained by TMZ surfaced showing Grande inside a California doughnut shop.
Early on, it shows Grande licking the doughnuts then egging on one of her friends to do the same.
When an employee brought out a tray of large doughnuts Grande said, "What the **** is that?"
She went on to grunt and say, "I hate Americans. I hate America."
Quickly thereafter, social media swept in like a fiery dragon condemning the pop star primarily for being insensitive toward Americans and obesity.
In a statement, Grande told FOX411, "I am EXTREMELY proud to be an American and I've always made it clear that I love my county (sic). What I said in a private moment with my friend, who was buying the donuts, was taken out of context and I am sorry for not using more discretion with my choice of words."
She went on to explain her frustration with "how freely we as Americans eat and consume things without giving any thought to the consequences that it has on our health."
Coincidentally, Grande canceled her performance at the MLB All-Star Game next week for medical reasons. She said that decision had nothing to do with the doughnut incident.
The Florida-born pop superstar worth an estimated $16 million is still scheduled to appear at Amalie Arena July 16.
