TAMPA (FOX 13) - The University of South Florida sent out an alert warning students and staff to be on the lookout for a possible gunman this afternoon, but has since lifted the alert.
The alert just after 2 p.m. described a "possible armed subject" near the northwest corner of the Tampa campus and urged everyone to avoid that area.
USF police told FOX 13 News that Florida Hospital received a report of a person carrying a rifle walk across Fletcher and onto the USF campus. The subject was described as a black male in his early 30's, wearing a tan trench coat and green hat.
Police searched the area and did not find anything suspicious. At 2:19, the "all-clear" message appeared on the school's website. "No confirmation of a possible armed subject," the site stated.
