TAMPA, Fla. - Hurricane Hermine made landfall well north of the Tampa Bay area but bands of wind and rain whipped through, causing downed power lines, and widespread power outages. Hermine has since been downgraded to a tropical storm, but bands from the storm continued to pound the Tampa Bay area Friday.
More than 253,000 power outages were reported in the state total, Governor Rick Scott said.
Tampa Electric is reporting nearly 12,000 customers without power. Duke Energy is reporting more than 20,000 customers without power. Withlacoochee River Electric is reporting about 10,000 customers without power, and Lakeland Electric is reporting around 70 customers without power.
Downed power lines have also caught fire and traffic signals are reportedly out in many areas.
If there is no signal on a traffic light, police remind everyone that it should be treated as a four-way stop. Red flashing lights should be treated as a stop sign and yellow flashing lights should be treated as 'proceed with caution' when traffic permits.
