TAMPA (FOX 13) - It'll be a couple of weeks before the USF men's golf team tees off again. Fresh off their fourth straight American Athletic Conference championship, the Bulls took some time to kick back, but now they're back swinging.
"It was nice that we're coming off a winning mentality and a winning week, trying to take it into regionals and I think we'll just bring that confidence and it can only help," said Jimmy Jones, a senior on the team.
Also helpful: The Bulls' quest for its first national championship begins just outside of Orlando. The-seeded Bulls were one of 14 programs selected to compete in the Kissimmee regional that will take place May 14 through May 16 at Reunion Resort’s Watson Course.
"You don't have to get on an airplane," said USF head men's golf coach, Steve Bradley. "It's very similar grass, similar weather and humidity. It takes a lot of the stress of getting to places and unfamiliarity out of the question, which is certainly good."
This regional comes at a time where USF is ranked 20th in some polls after playing the most difficult schedule in all of college golf.
"It means nothing," said Bradley. "It's 54 holes, you got to play every golf shot like it means something without having that pressure of doing it."
The season also saw USF tie a program season record with five wins.
There's a reason for that. In an individual sport like golf, the Bulls have found a way to pick each other up.
"In a given tournament, if one of the guys is struggling, the other four always pick up," said Priyanshu Singh, another senior on the team. "You can try and pinpoint that towards something, but it's just worked out the way it has and hopefully it does for the next two months as well."
During a time where some teams fade, the Bulls don't. In fact, their approach is much different.
"I mean we always kind of have a knack to turn it on at the end," explained senior Cristian DiMarco.
"Last year we did the same thing. I think we kind of have an understanding of when to play our best and when it matters most," sophomore Kyle Flexsenhar said.
And that time is right now.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each of the each of the six 54-hole regional tournaments -- including the Kissimmee regional -- will advance to the championship rounds, which will be held May 25-30 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
The Bulls look to advance to the NCAA finals for the third time in the past four years.
