ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - St. Petersburg police say a body was found in a vehicle submerged in several feet of water near 62nd Avenue North and Bayou Grande Boulevard Saturday morning.
What we know:
According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, shortly after 7 a.m., a Ford truck driven by David Hawkins, Jr., 35, was traveling eastbound on 62nd Avenue Northeast, toward the end of the road.
Hawkins drove through a guard rail and into a grassy area, where he hit trees before driving into the water, SPPD said.
A caller told police a pickup truck was upside down in the water several feet from shore.
Fire crews also responded and found Hawkins dead inside the truck, SPPD said.
Hawkins' next of kin has been notified.
What we don't know:
Police say it is currently unknown why Hawkins did not stop at the end of the roadway.
