Fire forces 14 people from Clearwater apartments

FOX 13's Kailey Tracy has the latest from Clearwater, where one person was taken to the hospital after a fire broke out on Wednesday morning.

One person was taken to the hospital on Wednesday morning following a fire at a Clearwater apartment complex.

What we know:

Fourteen residents were displaced the day before Thanksgiving, according to Clearwater Fire & Rescue.

It happened shortly after six a.m. at 509 N. Harrison Avenue and shutdown the road while crews fought the fire.

"I smelled smoke and saw smoke out the window," resident Lisa Mangano said. "The fire shot upward into the higher floors, and it's right above my apartment, so my apartment's water damaged," she said.

According to Clearwater Fire Rescue, one person was taken to Morton Plant Hospital as a precaution.

Dig deeper:

Firefighters said the fire was caused by an electrical issue with an exhaust fan in a second-story bathroom.

"I feel grateful that things that could go really wrong didn't. It's amazing," Mangano said.

She said despite being displaced, especially the day before Thanksgiving, she’s grateful.

"Very thankful. Very thankful. I mean, there's damage, but we have a landlord that's actually going to take care of it, and you know, it is what it is, you know. I'm very grateful that we were all protected and safe, and everybody got out quickly, and all the pets just got out quickly," she said.

According to CFR, 14 people who lived in the apartments have been displaced. The Red Cross and the building owner are assisting them.

Mangano said the landlord has another property he’s offering displaced residents.

She plans to stay in a hotel for a couple of nights before going to the other property.
