Driver crashes into Brandon home in suicide attempt

A driver was seriously injured after crashing into the back of a home in Brandon Saturday morning, authorities said.

The vehicle slammed through a fence and into the home on Greenbelt Circle around 6 a.m.

According to fire rescue officials, two people were inside the home at the time, but they weren't injured.

The driver of the car, 55-year-old Lee Collins, told investigators he was trying to commit suicide. Collins had apparently stabbed himself several times before crashing into the home. Deputies said he was driving between 60 and 70 miles per hour prior to hitting the house.

Collins was flown to Tampa General Hospital in serious condition.

Authorities said a building inspector was called out to assess the integrity of the structure.
