Fight involving Hardee County Correctional inmates leads to 9 injured, 1 dead

Officials said one inmate is dead and nine others were injured following an altercation at the Hardee Correctional Institute.

The deadly incident took place Thursday, but since it’s an active investigation, information provided to the public will be limited, according to the Florida Department of Corrections. The inmates’ identities have not been released. 

"Staff responded swiftly, and the situation was brought under control," according to a DOC statement sent Friday morning. "Nine inmates have been reported to have received injuries during the incident and one inmate was pronounced deceased."

No other information was provided, including what may have led up to the fight and how the inmates were injured.

According to the Florida DOC website, the prison has a capacity for 1,541. All prisoners held here are men.
