PLANT CITY, Fla. - Middle school students and kindergartners are getting their hands dirty for a sweet reward.
Children from Robinson Elementary are picking strawberries at Turkey Creek Middle School in Plant City, with some help from students with the school's Future Farmers of America program.
"They've been learning about strawberries and learning to pick the best ones and they've been teaching the kindergarten students what they've been learning," said agriculture teacher Allison Sparkman.
"It's fun it teaches kids a lot of responsibility," said Turkey Creek Middle student Michael Jones.
Up until 1956, Turkey Creek was a strawberry school.
Those schools would close for three months during the strawberry picking season.
"Our entire schedule was based on the strawberry production", said Sparkman.
Turkey Creek celebrates that history with this strawberry project.
Students can plant, pick and sell strawberries.
"It's important to get those kids to understand the process because without that process the product wouldn't get to the stores", said teacher Buddy Coleman.
One generation is sharing the fruits of their labor with another.
"Even if they don't go into agriculture the skills they learn will always help them", said Turkey Creek student Austin Holcolmb.
