Fierce storm damages Palmetto mobile home park

FOX 13's Kailey Tracy reports.

Sunday's strong storms caused damage to homes in a Manatee County community, with crews helping homeowners clean up the mess.

The National Weather Service says the thunderstorm’s 45-to-55 mph winds are to blame for peeling roofs off of a couple of mobile homes in a Palmetto neighborhood Sunday.

What we know:

According to the North River Fire District, firefighters responded along with Manatee County first responders to the Shadow Brook Mobile Home Park in the Palmetto area on Sunday afternoon.

Crews checked on residents and helped patch their roofs while hauling away debris, according to fire officials. They also flew drones over the area to make sure cleanup efforts were complete.

"It was sounding like a train coming through," Toni Johnson, who lives across the street from the home whose carport also blew away, said.

The storm rolled through around 2:15 p.m. Sunday.

"The two homes where the roof came off was the primary focus," Jodie Fiske, Director of Public Safety Manatee County, said. "Yesterday, they were inhabited. So, we have one home where the individuals were actually able to go stay at a different place, and then the other one, the residents felt comfortable enough to stay," she said.

The North River Fire District worked with Manatee County to help homeowners patch their roofs and haul debris.

"North River Fire was incredible yesterday. They helped to tarp the roofs. Well, really re-tarp the roofs and then just make sure that no additional water intrusion was coming in," Fiske said.

The neighborhood is no stranger to storm damage. Many residents are still making repairs from Hurricanes Helene and Milton, and now they’re helping each other clean up from Sunday’s storm.

"The residents in Shadowbrook did an incredible job helping their neighbors. I was on scene within about an hour and I mean, they were already on the roof. They already had it tarped … as soon as I got out of my truck, they were like, ‘well, this person needs this and this family needs that.’ So, they really, really did come together but we were able to coordinate a pretty quick response and recovery effort out there," Fiske said.

"After Milton, everybody came together like a big ole family helping each other out," Johnson said. "This is no different."

Manatee County officials say you can report damage and get help with debris pickup by calling 311. They’ll be following up this week with residents in Shadow Brook affected by Sunday’s storm this week.

No storm-related injuries were reported.
