Preemie elephant being nursed to health in Pennsylvania

PITTSBURGH, Fla. - The Pittsburgh Zoo is helping to nurse a prematurely born calf born in early June back to health.

The elephant that zookeepers say is "spunky," was born to a Seeni, an elephant at the International Conservation Center in Somerset, Pennsylvania, but Seeni wasn't producing milk, so the female calf was whisked off to Pittsburg.

The team is feeding, bathing and resting with the calf even when she's sleeping, caring for her 24 hours a day, while they watch carefully over her health.

Zookeepers say she still has a long road ahead of her.

She hasn't been named yet and will not be on exhibit for a while, but the Pittsburgh Zoo says they'll keep everyone updated on her progress on their blog.
