Troopers search for wrong-way driver who fled from Largo crash

Dashboard cameras are not just for police cars anymore.  A driver in Largo hopes his video helps catch a wrong-way, hit-and-run driver.

The crash happened just after 2 a.m. Saturday. Florida Highway Patrol said the driver of a black Chevrolet Camaro drove south in the northbound lanes of Starkey Road.

Video from Quinne Darkover’s dash camera shows what happened next.

The Camaro was in the inside left lane driving straight toward him.

Darkover said since buying the dash camera three years ago, he has never actually had to review the video - until now.

“There's so many crazy drivers these days you just never know,” he said. “I pretty well guess he was probably drunk or maybe a major idiot he was in the lane for a while.”

The Camaro swerved and swiped the front of Darkover's car, then kept going.

Thanks to the video, FHP troopers have a much better idea of who they’re looking for.

FHP’s Sgt. Steve Gaskins said video evidence, whether from a civilian’s dash camera, a nearby home or business, or another source, is more common and always helpful to an investigation.

“I think everyone should have [a dash camera],” Darkover said. “You might record something that happens to someone else, it might happen to you.”
