'You're gonna get shot': 1 dead in deputy-involved shooting in Hudson, bodycam video released

Suspect dead after deputy-involved shooting

A deputy-involved shooting in Hudson left one man dead and a Pasco deputy being evaluated at the hospital on Saturday night. 

Around 5:30 p.m., the suspect, an adult white man was at the 7-Eleven gas station on the corner of US 19 and New York Ave. According to the Pasco Sheriff's Office, the suspect was identified as 40-year-old Paul Smith.

Man killed in Pasco Co. deputy-involved shooting

A suspect was killed in a deputy-involved shooting in Pasco County after he drove with a deputy's legs hanging out of a vehicle.

A deputy on patrol noted that Smith had been wanted for battery by strangulation for about a week and had an extensive criminal history. In 2019, Smith was arrested in Hernando County for battery on a law enforcement officer, escape, and resisting officer with violence.

PSO said Smith got violent when the deputy approached him. Investigators said Smith then got into his car and started to drive off, and the deputy reached inside the vehicle to stop him.

The deputy tased Smith multiple times to bring him to a stop. Witnesses stated they saw the car driving out of the gas station with the deputy's legs hanging out of the car window. 

In the bodycam video, the deputy can be heard saying, "Stop the car, you're gonna get shot."

Bodycam: Deputy-involved shooting in Hudson

GRAPHIC VIDEO: The Pasco County Sheriff's Office released bodycam footage after a deputy-involved shooting in Hudson left one man dead on Saturday night.

The deputy fired an unknown number of rounds at Smith, then administered life-saving measures.

Smith was taken to an area hospital where he later died. The deputy suffered minor injuries and was discharged from the hospital on Saturday night.

All lanes of US 19 between New York Ave and Bolton Ave were closed for hours to allow detectives to work on the investigation.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the deputy-involved shooting, which is standard protocol for the sheriff's office. The deputy that was involved has been placed on administrative leave per FDLE protocol.
