2 dead after hotel room catches fire in Avon Park: HCSO

The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Bureau of Fire, Arson and Explosives are investigating an overnight fire at an Avon Park hotel that claimed two lives.

What we know:

HCSO said a call came at 1:59 a.m. about a fire in a second-story room of the Econo Lodge at 2511 US 27 South in Avon Park.

The first deputy arrived at 2:03 a.m., and Highlands County Fire-Rescue arrived at 2:08 a.m., followed shortly by the Avon Park Fire Department.

When officials were able to make it into the room, the entry was filled with smoke and both people inside, an adult man and woman, were dead at the scene.

No other injuries to hotel guests or first responders were reported. 

What we don't know:

The Fire Marshall will be investigating the cause of the fire, while HCSO conducts a parallel death investigation.

At this time, officials do not believe the fire to be suspicious, and no other hotel room was affected.
