3.6 million Playtex plates, bowls recalled for choking hazard

(FOX 13) - More than 3.5 million plate and bowl sets for children are being recalled after 372 defects that could cause choking have been reported. 

The Playtex brand sets were sold at Babies“R”Us, Target, Walmart, and other stores nationwide, as well as online at Amazon.com from October 2009 through August 2017.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall, saying the plates have a clear plastic layer over various printed designs. The clear plastic can bubble or peel and become a choking hazard. 

The printed designs include cars, construction scenes, giraffes, princesses, and superheroes, and have a colored rim on top and a non-slip bottom. The brand name Playtex is printed on the bottom.

The plates and bowls were sold separately and together in sets. A Mealtime set is comprised of a plate, a bowl, two utensils and a cup.

The CPSC says anyone who has these plates and bowls should stop using them and take them away from young children. Consumers should contact Playtex for a full refund.

CPSC says Playtex has received 372 reports of the clear plastic layer over the graphics bubbling or peeling and 11 reports of pieces of the detached clear plastic found in children’s mouths, including four reports of choking on a piece of the clear plastic layer.
