Discounted leases, flexible terms available Wednesday for Bay Area residents displaced by hurricanes
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Nearly four months after Hurricanes Helene and Milton displaced thousands of residents across Florida's gulf coast, the City of St. Petersburg is teaming up with the Bay Area Apartment Association to help people find housing solutions.
The city and the trade association, self-described as 'serving the interests of the rental housing industry,' will host a Hurricane Recovery Rental Housing Fair on Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 3-7 p.m., at The Coliseum (535 4th Ave. N).
What to expect as an attendee
Big picture view:
According to organizers, the fair will help individuals displaced by recent hurricanes connect with rental housing providers in St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, and surrounding counties.
- 40+ housing communities associated with the BAAA will provide hands-on application assistance for both short-term (6 months) and longer-term (12+ months) apartment rental opportunities.
- Housing providers will be available to answer any inquiries regarding the availability of apartments across the St. Pete area.
- Discussions with staff about rental assistance and how to navigate the financial constraints that many face following natural disasters.
In a news release from the city, Housing and Neighborhood Services administrator Amy Foster described the housing fair as "a significant step towards housing stability and recovery for those affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton."

Although the event is being held in St. Pete, organizers encouraged households displaced by the hurricanes and who live outside the city to attend.
"Surrounding areas will benefit from the guidance and assistance provided, as the event is designed to be a comprehensive resource for attendees," the news release said.
According to city officials, many of the housing providers in attendance are offering discounts, flexible terms, or other concessions to people who were displaced by the hurricanes.
