Marco Rubio, former Florida senator, sworn in as US secretary of state: WATCH

Marco Rubio was officially sworn in as the Secretary of State by Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday morning in Washington, DC, making him the first Cabinet nominee of President Donald Trump to win congressional approval.

The Senate unanimously confirmed the now former Florida senator, during a floor vote by the full Senate Monday night, several hours after Trump took his oath of office earlier in the day. 

The full Senate floor vote occurred following a separate vote by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which also voted unanimously in favor of Rubio's nomination Monday, FOX News reported.

Trump nominated Rubio for Secretary of State in November, shortly after his victory in the 2024 presidential election.

Who is Marco Rubio?

What we know:

Rubio was born in 1971 in Miami, Florida, to two immigrant parents from Cuba. He watched his father work as a banquet bartender, while his mother juggled caring for the family at home and working as a hotel maid and briefly in a local factory.

Rubio has represented Florida in the US Senate since 2011. Before his election in 2010, Rubio served as a city commissioner in West Miami and as speaker of the Florida House of Representatives.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to replace Marco Rubio in the Senate.

Moody will be expected to hold her new seat until a special election in 2026. The winner of the special election would serve the remainder of Rubio's term. However, they will have to run for election again in 2028.
