Florida woman stole, pawned jewelry from elderly woman's home: WHPD

A Florida woman faces serious charges after investigators say she stole jewelry from an elderly woman's home, then pawned it.

According to the Winter Haven Police Department, the victim hired a man in October to help cut down a hurricane-damaged tree.

Police said the man brought his girlfriend, Kalan Davis, 35, with him to the home. The pair visited four times between Oct. 16 and Nov. 8.

The victim told police that Davis did some additional odd jobs inside the home during those visits, for which she was paid.

According to investigators, the victim became suspicious when a jewelry box that was on her bed disappeared, with Davis later saying she happened to find the box under the bed, although the victim had already looked there "numerous" times.

The victim told police that after the couple left, she noticed some of the jewelry, worth an estimated $10,000, was gone. She said Davis denied taking the jewelry when confronted, telling the victim she "loves her" and would never do that.

Investigators searched pawn shops in the Winter Haven, Auburndale and Lakeland areas and found several pieces of jewelry Davis allegedly pawned for more than $5,500 in total.

Police arrested Davis on Dec. 7 on a charge of grand theft $5,000 less than $10,000. Records show she's out of the Polk County Jail on $25,000 bond.

"I applaud our victim and her keen recall of the occurrences leading us to make this arrest," said Winter Haven Police Chief Vance Monroe in a statement. "Preying on the elderly is as about as low as you can go, but Davis found out our victim was smarter than she was."
