The backstory:

According to police, Miller was working in the median lane along Dali Blvd. on the night of Wednesday, Jan. 22, when Michael Aoun, 34, lost control of his Chrysler minivan. He hit a statue and a light pole before hitting Miller, according to police.

Miller was putting down flags for a Grand Prix monument at the time, police said, and was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries.

Investigators said Aoun was speeding at the time of the crash and showed signs of impairment, leading to his arrest on charges of driving under the influence causing serious injury and reckless driving causing bodily injury.

Pinellas County Jail records show Aoun was released on $50,000 bond – $25,000 for each charge – shortly before noon on Monday, less than 16 hours before Miller died.

Police said Tuesday that additional charges against Aoun are pending.
