Man arrested for DUI after hitting, critically injuring pedestrian: SPPD

A man faces criminal charges, including DUI, after St. Petersburg police say he hit a pedestrian, leaving him critically injured.

What we know:

SPPD said Michael Aoun, 34, was speeding in a red Chrysler minivan on Dali Blvd. SE shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday when he lost control, hitting a statue and a light pole before hitting another man.

The 37-year-old victim was working in the median lane putting down flags for a Grand Prix monument, police said. He was rushed to the hospital and is in critical but stable condition at last check.

Aoun stayed at the scene, according to investigators, and was arrested after he was found to be under the influence. He faces charges of driving under the influence causing serious injury and reckless driving causing bodily injury.

What we don't know:

SPPD did not release further details on how Aoun was determined to be under the influence.
