Officer breaks window to reach child in hot car
MT. JULIET, Tenn. - An officer in Tennessee had to bust the window of a hot car to reach a two-year-old sweating and alone inside the car.
Mt. Juliet police say a concerned citizen called police when they saw the child sitting inside the SUV, which was left not running in the parking lot of a Walgreens.
Police say the responding officer broke out the window to reach the child.
The child was checked out by paramedics and was not injured.
It was around 80 degrees outside, and researchers say the inside of a car without air conditioning can reach about 100 degrees in just 10 minutes.
Police say the child's mother was found inside the store and they are investigating the incident.
Police are warning others, though, never to leave a child alone in a hot car. "Whether the car is running or not, it's a dangerous situation for any young child - especially on a hot day," the department said on Facebook. "It is also against the law."
