Police crack down on speeding drivers at airport

TAMPA (FOX 13) - Police are cracking down on speeders at Tampa International Airport's new reduced speed limit zone.

During construction, which began this summer, the posted speed limit has been reduced from 35 to 25 miles per hour.

"I just feel 25 is a little too much. People can run that fast almost," said Erika Cantor, an Uber driver that frequents the airport.

Several people complained that the speed limit is too low, but many agree that laws are set in place to ensure a safe environment.

"I just think you have to anticipate it. Too many people get hurt in construction zones so as long as you plan ahead, I don't see a problem with it," John Ploeger said.

TIA said that with so many construction workers around the airport for extended periods of time, their main concern is safety.

"We have a lot of construction workers in the area. We have heavy construction traffic, vehicles getting on and off the parkway," said TIA spokesperson Danny Valentine. 

Speeding drivers risk getting tickets that range up to $258. FOX 13 examined some of the most recent tickets, the majority of which were written for offenders going nearly double the posted speed limit.

"If you're going to double than absolutely you deserve a ticket. Hopefully if it's only a few over, hopefully they give you a break" Bradley Martin said.

Construction at TIA is set to continue at least until the end of 2016 and airport officials said the reduced speed limit will follow the construction schedule.
