Defendant Nicole Nachtman was laughing and giddy when she met with her brother, Joseph months after being arrested for killing her mom and stepdad.

But as her murder trial gets closer, new evidence released in the case shows she tried to throw detectives off her scent.

Documents show Nachtman asked her roommate, Mariel Battle to lie to police and tell them she was in her dorm at the time her parents were killed.

Another roommate, Laura Hessemer remembers something else and told police about it.

"I just heard that her mom was in a car accident and she had just got in a car accident," said Hessemer.

But investigators say Nachtman left FSU and drove home to kill her parents.

Her brother, Joseph provided a possible motive.

"We've all known she's had problems with my mom basically her whole life. My mom [has] a very strong personality and my sister has a very weak personality... My sister is 21, 22 years old and she is still affected by my mom. My mom has some kind of control to influence her," said Joseph.

New documents show two neighbors witnessed Nachtman at her parents' home at the time of the murders.

But in an attempt to cover her tracks, Nachtman left a voicemail message for her grandmother claiming she was driving back to school and apologized for not saying goodbye in person.

Nachtman's trial is set for January 2019.
