Venice Theatre continues rebuilding 3 years after Hurricane Ian with sights set on opening in February
VENICE, Fla. - Venice Theatre is drawing closer to its planned February opening as construction workers rebuild the venue following severe damage from Hurricane Ian 3 years ago.
Venice Theatre rebuilds main stage
What we know:
For 75 years, the Venice Theatre has been a beacon in the community. When Hurricane Ian struck 3 years ago, heavy damage could be seen as the main Jervey Theatre remained exposed to the elements.
The project has cost $25 million dollars. New walls are up, and interior reconstruction on the building is moving quickly toward completion. The local landmark is preparing to welcome audiences back to the Jervey Theatre in February.
Executive director praises construction progress
What they're saying:
Executive Director Kristofer Geddie gave a tour of the facility to show the dramatic changes inside the building.
When asked how he feels seeing the point of construction right now, Geddie said, "I am thrilled. I cannot wait until opening, but even now, watching the progress on a daily basis, watching what comes next and what's new every time I walk into the Venice Theatre, I am more impressed with our construction team. Magnum Builders of Sarasota are just impeccable. And to know that we are opening this building in just a few months—February, so be there—but to see where we've come from and how we've gotten there with the community support, with the foundations, private families of all ages coming in to make sure this heart of the community is back."
Addressing the massive support from local residents, Geddie added, "This is a community theater. This building is for the community and for folks to be able to say, 'Oh, I helped do that. I have this gem in my community.' It's what this is all about: the community, the community, the community. And the community has made this possible."
Reflecting on the emotional journey since the storm, Geddie noted, "It will be extremely emotional, but it's an emotional ride every day. I am sure that all the blood, the sweat, the tears will be there because it has been this effort to restore this building and to restore this theater to be again the heart of the community."
Public tour and fundraising efforts
What's next:
The organization is still working to raise $5 million to completely restore the facility.
For a $7,500 donation, patrons can have a seat named and pay pledges in installments.
Members of the public can RSVP to see the progress during a final two-hour public tour on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. before the Jervey Theatre officially reopens. To RVSP email camille@venicetheatre.net
