Waymo recalls nearly 3,800 robotaxis for glitch that may allow vehicles to drive into standing water

Waymo recalled 3,791 robotaxis for a software problem that may allow the vehicles to slow down and subsequently drive into standing water on higher-speed roads.
In a May 1 recall letter, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that the robotaxis entering a flooded roadway may cause a loss of vehicle control, elevating the risk of a crash or injury.

Officials explained that the recall affects certain fifth and sixth generation automated driving systems.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a remedy for the impacted robotaxis is currently under development.

The agency concluded in the recall letter that as an interim remedy, Waymo adjusted the scope of vehicle operations to heighten weather-related constraints and updated the vehicle maps. These affected vehicles received an interim update by April 20.
