Urban Oak: Open for business after Irma

Power was a big issue. The owners, Jesse and James, of Urban Oak along Main Street in downtown Bartow said the first thing they did was check on the restaurant, and there was electricity. They took over the business in August and within a month Irma arrived. Because they had power, they served up food and drinks until they ran out. Then they remained open for those who didn't have air condition, and even those who just wanted to charge their phone. They met evacuees from across the state, even as far south as Key West.

Sometimes all it takes is a quick phone call to brighten someone’s day. Phyllis Roth makes a couple hundred calls every time she volunteers at the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay. She's a telephone reassurance operator. The free program helps people in the community who are homebound, elderly, and disabled.
