A City of North Port staff assistant, who has been with the city for 22 years, has worked each year to put smiles on residents' faces every Christmas season. This year, it's needed even more with so many people still rebuilding after Hurricane Ian. 

The Florida Legislature will meet next week for a special session on property insurance and property tax relief in the wake of damage caused by Hurricane Ian. The state's property insurance system is in turmoil, with six insurers being declared insolvent this year alone. Private companies have dropped hundreds of thousands of customers, forcing them into Citizens, the state's insurer of last resort.

The Atlantic hurricane season may be officially over, but there is a storm brewing out the middle of the ocean – far away from the U.S.

After FEMA denied Florida's request for funds to purchase building materials for homes damaged by Hurricane Ian, Gov. DeSantis announced the state will provide $25 million to storm victims: "We're not just going to sit there and take no for an answer," he said.

The team usually holds spring training at Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte, but the complex was significantly damaged by Hurricane Ian, county officials said.

Hurricane Ian damaged Sylvia Kennedy's home in North Port more than two months ago, and she's waited patiently ever since for her insurance company to process her claim.
