Deadly St. Pete crash sends 6 kids, 1 adult to hospital: Police

A woman was killed, and seven others, including six children, were injured in a crash Thursday afternoon in St. Petersburg

Timeline:

The crash involving two SUVs happened at 34th Street South and Fairfield Avenue South shortly before 3:30 p.m. 

Police said the woman driving a black Volkswagen SUV, who has been identified as Viola McDuffie, was heading eastbound on Fairfield Avenue South approaching 34th Street South. She had two young children in the vehicle with her, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

At the same time, a white Saturn Vue was also heading eastbound on Fairfield Avenue South, trying to make a a northbound turn onto 34th Street South. 

But, police said McDuffie's vehicle started accelerating for an unknown reason and crashed into the Saturn. That's when McDuffie's SUV rolled over and hit a power pole on the east side of 34th Street South.

What we know:

McDuffie died at the scene of the crash, and the two children in her vehicle were taken to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital with serious injuries. 

The Saturn's driver was taken to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital with injuries, but is stable, according to police. The Saturn also had four children inside, and all of them were taken to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, but are stable.
