Driver arrested after U-Haul crashes into hotel parking garage
ST. PETE BEACH (FOX 13) - A man was arrested after crashing a U-Haul into a hotel parking garage, deputies said.
Pinellas County deputies said they arrested Edgar Hidalgo, 32 of Sarasota. Deputies responded to Hotel Zamora, at 3701 Gulf Bouleavrd in St. Pete Beach at around 12:49 a.m. on Friday. They found substantial damage to the drop ceiling of the parking garage, but no reported injuries. Hidalgo was arrested shortly after nearby at Gulf Winds Drive and 64th Avenue, where the 10-foot U-Haul truck had roof damage.
Deputies said Hidalago admitted to the crash. He said he as attending a party at Hotel Zamora and was driving his passenger -- who was in the truck at the time of the crash -- to her car. He fled the scene and hid the truck in the area until deputies left the area.
He also told deputies he was planning to move to Miami on Friday morning, according to a media release. Hidalago was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of a crash, and possession of cocaine.
