Expanding minds through glass art

Students are getting a lesson in glass art at the Don McClellan Gallery in St. Petersburg and putting the finishing touches on their own unique pieces.

"With the plates that they're etching, a big part of designing those plates is actually geometry and putting your design in certain places where your piece looks balanced", said Lauren Hill, the coordinator with the DMG school project.

The project works with students at inner city schools in Pinellas County. “DMG” stands for demonstrate, mentor and grow.

"With molten glass and glass in general we can compare to science, chemistry and math and it's not that we want all the students to be glass artists but we want them to all learn something," continued Hill.

The hope is to get students fired up.

"If I can inspire some sort of science or chemistry or history learning in a student you might inspire their whole career for their future,” Hill added.
