FHP: DUI driver kills two on motorcycle in Riverview
RIVERVIEW (FOX 13) - The Florida Highway Patrol said it arrested a drunk driver who fatally struck two people on a motorcycle and fled the scene Saturday night.
The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. on US 301 at Johanna Avenue in Riverview.
According to investigators, 34-year-old Benson Johnston was driving a Lexus SUV when he tried to turn left onto Johanna Avenue from 301. FHP said Johnston turned into the direct path of an oncoming motorcycle, which was driven by 37-year-old Kerry Webb.
Johnston's vehicle collided with the motorcycle, throwing both Webb and his female passenger off the bike. Webb was pronounced deceased at the scene, while his passenger died at a nearby hospital.
FHP said Johnston ran home after the crash, but was arrested a short time later. His home is less than half a mile from the scene, troopers said.
Johnston was charged with DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash with death and felony DUI. He has multiple previous DUI convictions, according to court records.
