A sergeant in Florida was reportedly hospitalized after losing consciousness while trying to rescue kayakers who flipped into the water.

According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call was made shortly after 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday regarding an overturned kayak on Deer Point Lake.

The caller stated that two people were in distress in the water.

A sergeant with the criminal investigations unit was among the first to arrive and entered the water to assist the fallen kayakers, along with an FWC employee.

Officials said that the sergeant reached one of the swimmers but began to experience severe distress and lost consciousness due to ingesting a significant amount of water during the effort.

He was taken to an area hospital by emergency medical personnel, where he was sedated and intubated.
