One dead in Pinellas Park construction accident

A Dunedin man died following a construction accident, police say.

On Thursday after 10 a.m., Pinellas Park investigators responded to a building renovation site at 6651 102nd Avenue. Police say 27-year-old Richard Louis Collett was operating a 14-foot Scissor Lift as part of the renovations.

Police say it appears Collett was standing on top of the machine using a joystick-type controller to navigate it out of the building. As he was exiting a double-door entrance way, he became trapped between the top of the lift rail and the door frame.

Collett was an electrician apprentice and employed with Sunrise Electric of Pinellas, LLC. The company was doing sub-contractor work for Down Under Construction Services.

Officials with Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the death. Preliminary information indicates the death was an accident.
