Rays to extend protective netting for fan safety

Changes are coming to ensure Tampa Bay Rays fan are safe.

The Tampa Bay Rays announce Wednesday they’re extending the protective netting to the outfield edge of dugouts.

"The Tampa Bay Rays are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for each person who enters Tropicana Field and Charlotte Sports Park," read a statement issued by the team Wednesday. "We will be expanding the protective netting this season to the outside edge of the dugouts in both ballparks.”

The knot-less green net will be the same height as the current backstop nets at both facilities. It’ll reach about 29 feet high at the Trop and extend about 80 feet passed the dugout closer to the outfield. The changes will come in time for opening day.

The team says all affected season ticket holders will be contacted in the coming weeks with more information.
