Rotweiller found in Redlands fights to survive

NEW PORT RICHEY (FOX 13) - His face is so swollen he can't open his eyes. He has to be fed by syringe. Still, the Rotweiller named Riggs is making progress - slowly.

Rigg's was named by the founder of Rugaz Rescue after being found nearly dead, abandoned, tied to a fence in Redlands outside of Miami.

The Redlands is known as a dumping ground for dogs.

Based on his level of dehydration, he likely would not have lived another 24.

Six volunteer drivers formed a so-called ride to rescue to get Riggs to Rugaz Rescue in New Port Richey.

Devilyn Saunders says they think the Rottweiler is eight to 10 years old, but it's hard to tell. He has almost too many infections to count - skin, eyes, ears.

The worst infection is in his face and neck. He still can't open his mouth enough to eat and while they know he's partially blind, but haven't even been able to determine which eye.

"We think it's the right eye, but the swelling and damage is so severe, we can't open his eyes to see the extent of the damage in the eye, so far," Saunders said.

When he's not being treated at Regency Park Animal Hospital in New Port Richey, Riggs is being cared for at Saunders' home. She's a veterinary technician, and Riggs still requires around-the-clock care.  

"It's going to be a long haul with this guy, but he's a fighter and a lover. Throughout it all, he puts his paw in my hand, gives the tiniest kisses and snuggles, and falls asleep so peacefully," she said.
