Seniors' quality of life improved by low-cost, free equipment
ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - Kelli Casto is always a welcome sight for Sydney Stark.
"A blessing, an absolute blessing," said Stark.
Thanks to Casto's program, Saving Our Seniors, Stark, who has problems with her back and legs, was able to get an electric recliner for free.
"I can't be on my feet for long periods of time so I either have to get in the bed or get in the chair and I sure don't want to spend all day in the bed," said Stark.
Casto started Saving Our Seniors a few years ago while she was working as a therapist.
"I saw so many clients not getting the proper equipment that they needed," said Casto.
"I think it's going to be more and more prevalent because of Medicaid," Stark added.
Casto started a grassroots effort out of her home and then it took off through word of mouth.
"All of a sudden, the equipment started coming and then it started coming more and I was finally able to get a warehouse space," said Casto.
She has been able to help about 500 seniors get equipment at low cost or free.
"I think they have a better quality of life when they're at home so if I can help them be able to stay there a little bit longer then I'm all for it," said Casto.
Seeing a thankful client like Stark is the biggest payoff for Casto.
"Just having a grown woman start crying because you've given her the ability to live a little more independent is a great feeling and I think we should do more for our seniors," said Casto.
Casto said, while the program continues to grow, she could use a truck and more volunteers.
