Shot promises to melt away your double chin

When you think of anti-aging injections, you think of Botox or fillers. But now there's a new kind of shot that works by melting away the unwanted fat under your neck.

The new treatment is called Kybella and it was approved by the FDA in April 2015. Kybella is the same chemical, deoxycholic acid, that we make naturally in our livers.  It works by breaking down the cells that store fat.

Tampa cosmetic surgeon Dr. Adam Scheiner has been using the chemical for years, but he says the manufacturers of Kybella made it better.

"They purified the product and now I feel much more comfortable offering this to my patients," he explained.

He suggested it to his 40-year-old patient Kimberly Bermel. She works in media and makes appearances in front of the camera every week. She noticed unwanted lines under her chin and she was concerned.

"If you laugh sometimes and you bring your head back, what might not be considered a double chin to most, in some awkward position it could come across that way," she said.

Kimberly received two sets of Kybella shots in her chin over the course of a month. Some patients might only need one set, but most will require two to four.

Dr. Scheiner says there can be some side effects. "We're going to see a little swelling, a little bit of pinkness, sometimes there's a little bruise."

Kimberly says she notices a difference in her chin line.

"I feel that this area looks tighter, more firm in the jaw line, neck area than it used to," she said.

She hopes this non-invasive approach will help her stay ahead of the aging process.

A session of Kybella costs between $1,200 and $2,500. If you're considering using it, your best bet is to find someone experienced in administering Kybella.
