Student arrested in Tarpon Springs HS fight says he was targeted

TARPON SPRINGS (FOX 13) - Ten Tarpon Springs High School students were arrested Tuesday morning after school officials say they were unable to get a fight under control. Later, parents of some of the arrested students said more could have been done to stop what was actually the third day of fighting between students.  

Naji Walker's parents said fights happened at the school Monday as well, and administrators and police should have seen it coming. 

"Everyone crowded around to see a fight, and it was just complete chaos and mayhem," Naji told FOX 13 News.

Naji said he and his brother were the target of the mob. The situation stemmed from a fight on Saturday in Palm Harbor, where he said two students jumped him.

"I spoke with the school officials and let them understand how serious this situation was, and that we can get an action plan going to where, not only my children would be safe, but children surrounding," Singletary said.

After that conversation, Singletary said no additional officers were brought in, despite her request.

Police say four teenage girls began fighting, but then several teen boys jumped into the mix.  Staff called the school resource officers, who requested backup.

"None of the involved would listen to the repeated instructions of school staff or officers on scene to stop their aggressive behavior," a police statement explained.  "Therefore, in the interest of the safety of all students and staff, officers effected the arrest of 10 students."

The four girls and six boys -- all ranging between freshmen and juniors -- face charges of disorderly conduct. No weapons were involved, and there were no serious injuries reported.

But there have been 22 fights at Tarpon Springs High this school year alone; three that had to be reported to the state.

Parents said it's even more frightening to know the potential for what could happen at a child’s school each day.
