USF makes list of top 50 public universities

TAMPA, Fla. - For the first time in its history, the University of South Florida has cracked the list of top 50 public universities, a list released yearly by U.S. News and World Report. 

The designation brings a smile to the face of the university's new president, Steve Currall.

"It is a testament to our commitment to student success, to research visibility, and community outreach,' Currall said.

Jumping 14 spots over last year, to number 44, USF is calling itself America's fastest-rising university.

"It'll help us further contribute to the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, help us create jobs and prepare the workforce for the future," Currall said.

Also moving up, the University of Florida, from number eight to seven. Florida State also improved, winding up at 18 on the list. Governor Ron DeSantis stopped by both schools Monday to offer his congratulations.

"The importance goes beyond the opportunities for students. As governor, it really helps me attract more investment in Florida if I can point to the university's doing well in Florida," the governor said.

He touted the affordability of Florida's rising institutions. 

"It's affordable and if you look at the education you're getting for the price I think that combination is probably unmatched in the country," he said.

All three schools say they won't rest on their laurels, hoping to climb even higher.

"Our higher education system is improving all the time and creating great opportunities for Florida residents," added Currall.
