Body camera video shows deputies injured in crash

Pasco County deputies who were assisting one traffic crash became the victims of another crash themselves.

The deputies were investigating a minor crash at State Road 52 and Hays Road on Tuesday afternoon. The crash was a result of an eastbound sedan turning into the path of a sedan traveling westbound. Both vehicles then collided with a third sedan that was sitting at a red traffic light.

The two deputies were rendering aid to the occupants in the three sedans when, a short time later, a pickup truck traveling east turned left into the path of a pickup truck that happened to be traveling west. Those trucks collided, and the impact pushed them into the scene of the first crash.

Both deputies were struck by the trucks and were injured, but are expected to be O.K. Roads reopened after about two hours.

Pasco County Sheriff officials released body camera video on Wednesday morning.

“This is an example of the dangers that our men and women face every day they put on the uniform,” the agency said in a statement. “One of our injured members continued to serve, making sure that another person involved in this crash received care. We also see our citizens working to help fellow accident victims. We urge you to slow down, especially on wet roads and near traffic crashes.”
