The Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center says it is bursting at the seams with adoptable cats.

In an effort to relieve some of its overcrowding, the center is offering its more than 180 cats and kittens for free to loving homes through Sunday, December 3.

HCPRC says the number of cats at the shelter is much higher than normal for this time of year.

Workers hope to help find permanent, loving homes for the felines by eliminating all fees for cat adoptions the rest of this week.

Costs to adopt are normally between $20 and $70.

Pet Resources officials urge residents not to surprise a family member or friend with a dog or cat as a Christmas gift without planning and research. They offer assistance from trained staff for anyone seeking a gift pet this holiday season.

"Pets are a long-term commitment, and finding the perfect dog or puppy, cat or kitten should be a joyful process handled together as a family," the center says.
