Crashes keep happening at intersections in Hampton Terrace; residents want action

Neighbors in the Hampton Terrace neighborhood of Seminole Heights say they are tired of testing their luck at an intersection where crashes have become far too common.

Now they're asking the city to do something about it.

Home surveillance video shows a car blowing through a stop sign on N 9th Street, at E Henry Avenue, and hitting another car that neighbors say was driven by a pregnant woman.

About two weeks ago, another crash at N 12 St. and E Idlewild Ave. caused a car to break through a residential fence and barely scrape the home.

"Luckily, nobody was hurt," said Eva Carballa, who lives there with her husband and two young children."We play out here all the time, if that had been a weekend day, we would have been out here, and somebody could have been killed."

According to Carballa, it's the second time a car has jumped the curb and broken their fence. Her husband, Greg says it's time the city adds four-way stop signs to that intersection.

"How do we prevent this?" and "Is this the right place for us?" are questions Greg Carballa said he and his wife are constantly asking themselves.

The city of Tampa sent the Carballas a letter in response to their request for a four-way stop sign. The letter says the city is aware of the traffic issues in their neighborhood, specifically at N 12 St. and E Idlewild, and for that reason, it plans to construct a raised intersection there. However, the city said the intersection does not warrant a four-way stop sign.
