Few details released after suspect shot by FHP trooper
ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - A suspect was shot by a Florida Highway Patrol trooper Monday afternoon in St. Petersburg.
FHP said the incident started when a trooper tried to pull over a vehicle on southbound I-275 near Gandy Boulevard shortly after noon.
The driver of the vehicle didn't stop and exited onto Gandy Boulevard before hitting two other cars on Grand Avenue, troopers said. After that, the driver and passenger got out and fled from the area.
A short time later, a trooper found and confronted one of the suspects, who was armed. The trooper and suspect exchanged gunfire, officials said.
The suspect was shot and was taken to a hospital in serious condition. FHP said the second suspect was taken into custody at the scene.
The trooper and suspects have not been identified. It's also unclear what the vehicle was being pulled over for and what unfolded during the confrontation with the suspect.
