A Jacksonville police officer died in a traffic crash Tuesday morning, the sheriff’s office announced.

The crash occurred at Interstate 295 and Alta Drive. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the officer was responding to a separate traffic crash on the highway when his vehicle crashed into a tree around 4:30 a.m. Officials say weather conditions may have been a factor, but the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Sheriff Mike Williams said the officer, whose identity has not been released, was working a midnight shift. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died.

The agency posted the following message on its Facebook page:

On this Police Memorial Day, our hearts are breaking as we work a police vehicle crash at I-295/Alta involving a JSO police officer who has died this morning.

Please keep their family, co-workers, friends, and fellow officers in your prayers.  💙

Next of kin has not been made, and we ask everyone to be respectful of this process. As more information becomes available, it will be released. Thank you for your patience during this difficult time.
