Local artist creates supersized art exhibit at Creative Pinellas

Artist Sam Modder's imagination came to life through her pen as she created a fantasy world that is on display right now at Creative Pinellas.

Beth Gelman, their senior director of arts and cultural programing, wanted Modder's display for their gallery specifically because Modder brought a larger-than-life fantasy world to cover the space from floor to ceiling.

Sam Modder described her art this way, "The work here is part of a larger narrative, it's kind of like a fairy tale that I've been developing."

Its style is like a graphic novel except enlarged and wall sized.

"They start off as ball point pen drawings, I do draw pretty big, and then I scan them and I digitally collage them together in photoshop, and I print them out in panels and that goes up on the walls," she said, "It's designed specifically for this space so that it really fits the space well."

As the viewer walks room to room, the story unfolds as Modder's world appears on every surface.

"The initial prompt for all of this, I was just in my head a lot. I kind of just wanted to escape," she admitted, "Since then, it's kind of developed from there. It's still ongoing, I'm still making and thinking through more scenes in this world."
