Man, horse killed in Highlands County crash

A 74-year-old man and a horse were killed Saturday night after being struck by a truck on State Road 64 in Highlands County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say the man was riding the horse west on State Road 64 shortly before 10 p.m. when he entered the eastbound lanes and was struck by a 22-year-old man driving a pickup truck. 

Upon impact, the pickup truck veered off the roadway, crashed into a residential mailbox, the corner of a home located at 2001 State Road 64, a wooden fence and an unoccupied vehicle at the house. 

The 74-year-old man and the horse were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup truck suffered minor injuries.
